If you’re like me, you might be wondering what
in san havens a Cob House is?
Glad we’re on the same note.
Upon my vast and exhaustive research of cheap
housing, this was one of the main forms I
continued to see on the web as a valid option
for in-expensive housing.
So what is a…Cob?
Basically, a Cob is a mixture of clay, sand,
straw and water all combined to form a
structure.
Cob structures are nothing new. For
thousands of years, human beings have lived in
structures composed of Cob material…in fact an
estimated 30% of the world’s population lives in
earthen abodes.
Building a Cob house can be amazingly cheap and
can run you as little as $1000 to complete the
entire structure.

Once built, the clay walls work wonders in
insulating the abode, keeping it cool in the
summer and warm in the winter months which can
be quite cost efficient.
Cob structures are perfect for the artist at
heart as its walls make for a giant piece of
clay ready for beautiful molded design.
While it does take a lot of work and time to
make your very own Cob home, it may just be the
perfect option for you if money is tight and the
thought of debt makes your stomach sick.

Remember…playing in the mud is fun and almost
free, so enjoy the possibilities!
Though this may not be for everyone, for those
that don’t mind taking a more creative out of
the box approach to home sweet home, this is a
wonderful and versatile option.
“I have three precious things which I hold fast
and prize. The first is gentleness; the second
is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps
me from putting myself before others. Be gentle
and you can be bold; be frugal and you can be
liberal; avoid putting yourself before others
and you can become a leader among men.”
― Lao Tzu
“Frugality is one of the most beautiful and
joyful words in the English language, and yet
one that we are culturally cut off from
understanding and enjoying. The consumption
society has made us feel that happiness lies in
having things, and has failed to teach us the
happiness of not having things.”
